Paternity, Maternity and Kinship
Parentage testing with the highest degree of accuracy requires testing the father, child and mother. Why test the mother? Without knowing the mother's DNA pattern, certain statistical assumptions must be made, and the testing is less accurate. One STR allele is inherited from each parent.
For each STR system two alleles are identified, and the probability that this is the true biological parent can be readily calculated. The mother's DNA is subtracted from the child's DNA pattern. What remains is a very specific DNA pattern that was contributed by the biological father.
Forensic Paternity
STR DNA testing is a new and powerful tool to help resolve cases of statutory rape resulting in pregnancy. We have extensive experience, working with prosecutors, providing full service STR DNA testing, genetic evaluation, reporting and court-testimony.

The same kind of tests can be used to determine paternity, maternity, or sibship even when the parents may not be available for testing. More complex genetic relationships such as aunt-niece, uncle-nephew, grandparents, can also be determined from the techniques we utilize at DNA Forensic Consultants.

More sophisticated, more accurate

Scientific tests to determine parentage have evolved from very simple tests, using blood groups in the 1930's, to more sophisticated tests, using HLA (leukocyte antigens) in the 1970's, to the most complex and robust tests, PCR STR DNA tests in the 1990's. During this time the accuracy, the probability of parentage or identifying non-matches, has increased greatly. Initially, any probability greater than 90% was considered useful. Today we can achieve a 99.9% probability..
